Ethnic Notinns

...e. Mr. Williams a tall dignified man who speaks precise English was a person who made imitations and presented events that he knew “internally” he considered it to be stereotypical towards his ethnic group. Mahzarin Banaji said, “Our ability to categorize and evaluate is an important part of human intelligence, without it we couldn’t survive.”(Paul 517) Bert Williams uses this statement in reality without probably knowing it. He is an entertainer who entertains his audience as him being a black man in an outrages ridiculous mask where he acts as a stereotypical black man. Since he is putting on the act he is technically categorizing himself because he is an African American under a blackface. What he performs to the audience is a stereotype towards him and his ethnic group the African Americans, which is why he says the entertainment, is a double-edged reward where you get paid as well as demonstrate a disgrace to your ethnicity. There was a scene where Chris Rock was walking towards a pizzeria and a car pulls in and puts a song Chris Rock enjoys. Forgetting that he was an old man, he began to dance and sing a song that African Americans usually sing. When the African Americans saw him sing the song they did not hesitate to beat him up “just” because he was a white man singing a song created from a black man. Secondly, when Chris Rock was getting ready to perform in front of a live audience for his comedian hour, he did it and was booed off stage. He once again forgot he looked like the fat old man. This scene is very interesting, because it shows how discrimination, stereotype, segregation, and bias ideas occur within white people towards black. The real reason for exiting was that it was an Old white man saying jokes about black people which during that time was not allowed. Similar too Bert Williams, where he was a black man who was a comedian regarding to the African American. Both characters are similar in the way where, when they were looked at, the surrounding crowd’s first image which was a very important one...
