...ost important person in the universe, and the great things that he does, like he stands up to his silly teachers, he gets away with his misdeeds, he helps in capturing a pedophile, and saves the world). When I look at the message the film is trying to give; I believe that we are prisoners of our own minds, and what we want to believe we will believe and do with it, as we want whether it be changing or moving toward the direction our mind wants us to go. Also Donnie felt he was the most important person in the world and that whatever happened to others was of no importance, until the end of the movie after finding someone that he truly cared about. I also think that when Frank was around Donnie was in his mania phase otherwise he was in his depressed state of mind, which was throughout most of the movie. Jim Cunningham I believe that he had a delusion that he himself was the true messenger of god and that he could cure the world with a silly line between fear and love saying that everything in life that happened fell somewhere between those two points. In analyzing his sense of reality I believe that he did this to hide the fact that he was a pedophile and living on the assumption that by being in the limelight he would be able to hide. When it comes to his followers it seems to me that he was able to manipulate them with beliefs that he was truly a messenger from god and that he knew the way to become free from life’s worries. Ms. Farmer was more concerned with being in control, and Donnie was more consumed with fear. Ms. Farmer needed to always be in control just like when she was going to support Jim Cunningham. You could also see the control she instilled in her classroom and how she became very upset when Donnie would not conform. I believe that the only thing that Ms Farmer was afraid of was that she would not be in control of what ever she was involved in. I believe that is why she was more concerned with Jim Cunningham then the dance troupe she trained because she had already had them under her control in that they would perform the way she had taught them. She now had the need to control what was going to happen with Jim Cunningham so she was able to ask another person to chaperone the dance troupe to star search. When it comes to Donnie I believe that he was always afraid and thought that, he had to defend himself no matter what bringing about his confrontations with other people I also believe that Donnie was very afraid of being alone this bringing about the character Gretchen in his dream so that he would have someone with him. Roberta Sparrow I believe represented an avenue of understanding for Donnie right from the start at their first encounter she told Donnie without even knowing him "Every living creature on earth dies alone." Then as the film progresses we know that she was perpetually crossing and re-crossing the street to check her mailbox for a letter that never seems to come. I would say that the reason she was crossing the street perpetually looking in her mailbox was that she was waiting for the letter from Donnie. Then we see time rewinding thanks to the sophisticated special effect technique known as "running the film backwards,"...
