Many of these technologies are expensive, and work for only small numbers of students; they are not scalable to large numbers. For example, I am a retired Federal employee who has over 30 years experience with the Department of Defense. During my career, the federal government has changed computer systems various times. In order to keep up with those changes and to determine what systems were conducive to their needs, there was a time that I had to learn not only one spreadsheet application, but a total of three within three years. Other courses such as human relations, time management, and database have been offered during my career. I have used this opportunity to advance my skills and knowledge in order to make myself more promotable and to keep up with changes in the federal government. During my career of 30 years, I have been involved with the American Society of Military Comptrollers. As a member of this organization, I had the opportunity to attend their annual symposium. At this symposium, which lasted three days, I attended various seminars on retirement, changes in the federal government accounting and budgetary system and ways to improve the office environment. Seminars are important because they are short, concise and very informative on one specific industry. They are where people can network with others with the same interests and concerns that they may have in their field.
