... has a very positive corporate culture. One of the most obvious things I have noticed visiting Lockheed Martin at job fairs is the diversity of their employees. It seems all ethnic groups are represented and their seems to be no road blocks to advancement. Of the companies I have talked to, Lockheed Martin has one of the most generous tuition reimbursement programs as well as a number of internal programs that lead towards Master degrees. They are also very active in the community as indicated by their support of a number of charities. I had a friend who worked for the company who told me about his work as a tutor at a local elementary school. He stated the company encourages employees to get involved with community improving projects. I have been told that Lockheed Martin evaluates managers not only on their professional achievements but also on community involvement. Employees: After reviewing the Lockheed Martin website and from my discussions with HR representatives, one theme rings out as far as the type of employee the company looks for. They want enthusiastic people who are comfortable working in a team environment and that have the desire to learn. My understanding is that typically when a team is assigned to a project, it normally consists a diverse group of people from all age ranges. Employees are encouraged to play an active role no matter what their experience level. Also, I believe that Lockheed Martin is looking for employees that are willing to make a commitment to the company. Unlike a number of Defense Contractors in the area, the company is willing to hire energetic recently college graduates placing them on overhead projects while they await government security clearances. Ownership: Lockheed Martin stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange however; the company does support employee ownership through their 401K programs. The company matches 50% of the first 4% of an employees’ salary with Lockheed Martin stock. Employment Strategy: In the Northern Virginia area, the best strategy would be to attend the local IT job fairs. They are an excellent way of meeting hiring managers face to face. From my experience, it seems that when a department has a pressing need for employees, it is not uncommon to find a hiring manager eager to talk to people at these events. As a Sophomore, I have discovered that it is a little too early for the company to consider me for employment, but they do have an interest in me has I progress through college. Consequently, I intend to maintain contact with the hiring managers I have met keeping them informed as to my progress in college. In addition, I have joined a Monster.com professionally mentoring group and have emailed various professionals concerning my career development (it has been helpful and only costs $10 a month).
