This is when all the feelings Calixta had for Alcee refreshed in her heart and allowed her to open up to Alcee. This is a classic example on how first loves will always be a part of your heart. Calixta was missing something in her marriage and Alcee fulfilled that for her. Calixta cheated on Bobinot because Alcee was her first love and that little amount of time she received happiness from Alcee was enough to last her a lifetime. This story is set in the 1800s and I am sure women in that time, like women today, wanted the same things out of her relationship or marriage. Women want to be loved, appreciated and cared for by the man she loves. Calixta did not get that from Bobinot, however, they seemed to not have an affectionate relationship and that is a key factor in any relationship. Calixta was lonely and Alcee provided that passion and affection that was lacking in her life and this caused her to cheat. She could also be trying to catch Bobinot’s attention to see if he truly cares about her. Another reason the infidelity took place was because both Calixta and Alcee wanted something different that was temporary. I do not support cheating, but I do see where cheating could be done to get out of a routine. They both could have been bored in their marriages and wanted some sort of temporary escape from their spouses. The keyword is temporary because they both have children and want to keep their marriages intact. “The contact of her warm… had aroused all the old-time infatuation and desire for her flesh.” (97, 7th Edition), showed the readers that they obviously had fling before and those memories are coming back. The first cause of cheating is temptation the way one feels no matter how much one may deny it. As I mentioned earlier, I compare my friend and Calixta in many instances. My friend was strongly tempted by her first love just as Calixta was by Alcee, especially since they had something before. I believe that if Calixta would have avoided her temptation she would not be able to last with Bobinot. Sometimes, people need that temporary escape to make their situation stronger and it did with Calixta and Bobino...
