He saw an old man - he had never seen old age before. He saw a sick man – he had never seen illness before. He saw a funeral, with the relatives weeping around the body. He had never seen sorrow or death before. As he was thinking about these things, he saw a holy man. The man was contented and happy, and said that he had given up his home and his family to wander from place to place searching for the answers to the problem of suffering in the world. Siddattha was deeply disturbed by what he had seen, and decided that he too, must try to find the answer to this problem.
