Multiculturalism
...ns. “By the mid 1920’s the immigrant farmers owned more than 5000 farms worth $27 million with yearly incomes of around $8 million.”2 This shows how the economy soared and Canada became the largest wheat exporter around the world. During this same period, large numbers of Chinese and South Asians also came to Canada as laborers to work in the mines, on the railroad or in service industries and helped Canada boom its economy and match other countries. The CPR or the Canadian Pacific Railroad, which was built by the immigrant labourers, helped Canada trade goods between provinces and it enabled Canadians to travel through out the country. During the late 1920’s the settlers started to move towards big cities as the country took its first step towards industrialization. Businesses sprang up, factories opened up and more over there were a lot of immigrants in demanding jobs. They worked hard everyday as the businesses started expanding making Canada an industrialized nation. Canada’s developed immigration policy over the years has encouraged talented, qualified and skilled immigrants to immigrate to Canada and contribute to its economy. “In 2000, 58 percent of working-age immigrants had a post-secondary degree at landing, compared with 43 percent of the existing Canadian population, which shows Canada has been attracting skilled and qualified immigrants to help it self develop.”3 It is due to this policy that over the years Canada has been transformed into economically strong and developed country. Canada is a world leader in the fields of telecommunications, biotechnology, aerospace technologies and pharmaceuticals due to the contributions of these hardworking and qualified immigrants. During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s a large number of immigrants came to Canada to improve their future less that they realized they ended up changing the country’s future. Now since the early 1990’s qualified and skilled people have been coming to Canada. They have helped the economy because they are qualified doctors, lawyers, scientists and entrepreneurs who can work and earn a healthy living without any government assistance. Economic growth due to several different immigration booms has developed Canada into an industrialized and urbanized nation. The hard work and determination of the immigrants including the early settlers has helped the country as it gained power and autonomy of its own citizens with the growth of the population. The country became urbanized as immigrants chose bigger towns and cities over farms. As the early settlers came to Canada new towns, cities and provinces sprang up as new roads and highways were built for the growing population. “A study during 1996 revealed that 55% of the new immigrants settle in Ontario, almost 9 out of 10 immigrants live in the capitals of the respective provinces and Toronto attracts around 37% of the total immigration population.”4 5 Immigrants that started moving to the big cities worked in industries, factories and constructions companies for really low wages, which provided the owners to expand their businesses. This helped Canada to emerge as an industrialized country with a strong economy. Moreover they helped in building highways and railroads that increased movement, trade and revenues through out the country. In the last 10 decades, Canada has gradually developed its industrial division. Many different industries like automotive, food, plastics, wood, and primary etc. have sprang up and helped the citizens in many ways. This was only possible due to the help of the hardworking immigrants during the early 1900’s and the boom of highly skilled, and talented since the late 1960’s those have provided the major workforce, elaborative ideas and their advanced knowledge for these industries to grow. There has also been a big growth in areas like transportation, power generation and oil productions. Canada has become an ideal country in North America, for setting up new industries, opening up businesses and migrating to because Canada today is one of the most ethnically and racially diverse countrie...
