Out on the prairies of Alberta, Canada, there’s an imaginary Indian Reserve. We gather with the magpies to hear one of the elders tell a story about Granny, Ambrose and Wilma. Before she died, Granny made Ambrose promise that he would not let her be buried in a hole. He would honour her body the old fashioned way - by putting her in a tree. But Ambrose is away when Granny dies and Wilma, who doesn’t really hold with the old ways, gives Granny a traditional Christian burial. Will Ambrose keep his promise to Granny? Magpies is a story about storytelling itself. The magpies serve as audience and chorus. They challenge the authority of the storyteller.
