...ingle,”Don’t do me like that,” was on the top ten. This album sold over two million copies. This was when Tom Petty became very popular. Not too long after his popularity took off, he began to have record company problems again. Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker were getting ready to release their album “Hard Promises.” MCA wanted to sell the record for $9.98, which at that time was a lot of money for a record. The group threatened not to release the album and after a few protests it was releases and sold for $8.98. This album went platinum with a hit single, “The Waiting.” Later in the year Petty started producing Del Shannon’s comeback album, and wrote the song “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” as a duet for himself and Stevie Nicks to sing. That song was recorded on her album and was a number three hit. Tom Petty returned with the Heartbreakers in 1982 to release their album, “Not Long After Dark,” which went on to be their third top ten album in a row. Right after the band released the album, their bassist, Ron Blair left the band. But was quickly replaced by Howie Epstein. Petty and the band took three years making the follow up album called “Southern Accents.” On this album the band wanted to branch out in a different direction like touching soul. However, this did not go as easy as they planned it to. Petty actually ended up breaking his hand after punching a studio wall because he was so frustrated. The album finally released in the spring of 1985. The album featured the famous song from Alice in Wonderland, “Don’t Come Around Here No More.” Southern Accent went to number seven on the charts and went platinum. In 1986 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers went on tour with Bob Dylan as the backing band. Dylan contributed to their next album, “Let Me Up,” which was released in 1987. Just after the release of this album Petty’s house caught on fire and destroyed everything, but fortunately himself, wife, and two daughters made it out safely. In 1988, Tom Petty decided to become e a member of the group, the Traveling Wilburys. They released their first album towards the end of 1988, “Full Moon Fever.” The album brought up Petty’s solo career and support from the Heartbreakers. This album reached number three on the charts and went triple platinum. In 1990 with the Wilburys released their second album, “Vol. 3.” This was a busy year for Petty because he then too officially got back to together with the Heartbreakers to make another album as well. They released the album, “Great Wide Open.” This album received excellent reviews and also went platinum. In 1993, they released my favorite album, The Greatest Hits album. Which featured my favorite song, “Last Dance with Mary Jane.” Petty also left MCA and singed a $20 million deal with Warner Bros. The Heartbreakers drummer, Stand Lynch, also left the band in this year. This album went triple platinum and had the most single hits on any of their albums. After a few years of in 1996, the band got back together to do a soundtrack for Edward Burns’s film, She’s the one. The soundtrack went gold. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers last album was in 1999 called,” Echo.” The song I am going to talk about is “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.” I have always been a big fan of Tom Petty’s work but my favorite album would have to be the Greatest Hits. I definitely do enjoy his solo work a lot better. When I first heard this song, and like many other people, I thought it was about drugs. Especially in that time period many people such as Bob Dylan were putting code words in their song...
