...w up to be a man that she will be proud of. She shows that she is willing to sacrifice her own happiness to make sure that her son is happy. That is now where all of her devotion lies, that is what motivates her. She does love her son a great deal. He is the main focus of her life, but at the same time, she is struggling and is having problems with the way that she is bringing him up. She makes him feel ashamed of his feelings when he should embrace them. She uses Frederick as almost an excuse not to do some fun things that she could do. Also she “seldom openly punished him, but often revenged herself on him in small ways”. This is not good since that will create troubles for his later life. She uses her son to let out some of her frustrations of being an only parent, but she does not rely the hurt that she is causing him. This shows hypocrisy that some adult can have. 3. Frederick and his mom are character foils in the way that each of them deals with the loss of Mr. Dickinson. Mrs. Dickinson is a woman that can be a cold person that does not show much emotion. Even when her husband died she still had a straight face. It was almost like she was unfazed by all that was happening around her. People were saying, “she was braver then could be good for anyone”.
