... What Is the Significance of Literature? When I was in high school, I had very little interest in reading novels, poetry, or short stories. I did not comprehend the importance of reading nor the significance of understanding a literary work. I read only class assigned material to assure that I attained a passing grade. Consequently, as I grew older and decided to further my education I started to realize that literature is an essential part of the learning process. Therefore, I feel that reading a literary work involves reader-character interaction, understanding the essential meaning that the author is presenting, and evaluating what effect this reading has on my life. Upon reading any literature my overall objective is understanding and developing a personal relationship with the characters in the writing. I feel that a great book or short story will grasp my attention and keep me interested until the end. I want to crave for the conclusion in the second chapter of a ten chapter book. I prefer reading romance novels. Danielle Steele is one of my favorite romance novelists. I can relate to the characters and their desire to find love and happiness. Although, I find it hard to comprehend some author’s work, I make it a habit to review it as many times as necessary to gain an effective relationship with the characters in the writing. When reading a literary piece individuals may perceive Hendrix 2 completely different meanings from the same story. I feel that the main idea of a story varies depending on what the reader intends to gain from a particular literary work. For example, in the short story “A & P”, I empathized with Sammy when he quit his job prematurely without considering the consequences. He was only interested in pleasing the three girls and being their hero. I can relate to Sammy because I have acted on impulse without weighing all of my options. I feel that it is essential to read and comprehend any literary work to insure that one understands what the author is trying to convey. I have read novels and short stories that have left an impact on my life. Reading opens the mind and allows it to travel with the author to places and situations that one may have never experienced. For instance, I once read a book on slavery by Booker T. Washington. This writing opened my mind to the harsh conditions my ancestors had to overcome. In addition, this book helped me to understand the attitudes of my grandparents and great-parents concerning this vital subject. I also like to read biographies written about some of my favorite authors. After reading about J.K. Rowlings, I discovered that she was once a single mother on welfare. This uplifts me and lets me know that despite what I may be going through to never give up and to pursue my goals. In conclusion, literature plays an essential part in improving my writing skills. My comprehension of literature has improved dramatically since I have opened my mind to new authors and their work. I am not afraid of venturing out and reading the contributions of Ernest Hemmingway or Flannery O’Connor.
