Calling Thorough Reform on Quality of Chinese High Education

The statistics of Chinese graduate students shows that the total number of graduate students in such major accounts for 16% in the total number of graduate students in China in 2000, while the demand for them is only 10%. Therefore, the contraction of the subject mentioned above is quite necessary. Secondly, the seriousness of the problem in quantity of teachers and their teaching quality should be alarmed by the public. On the basis the Research in Chinese Education and Scientific “the quantity of teacher in collage in 2000 has increased by 13.6% since 1998” But it is far less and the increasing number of students. For examples, “the ratio of the teacher to student is 1:16.2 , less than that in USA 1:14.2 and the average ratio of world 1:14.4” What’s more, “in some specialties such as computer, engineering in western and central part of China the ratio is surprising 1:80”. The inevitable result is that many professors don’t have enough time and energy to teach and have to ask their graduate students who may not be well-qualified to replace them. It is reported that “1/3 of professors and 1/5 vice professors in 71 universities which are directly controlled by Ministry of Chinese Education don’t take their duties of teaching properly”. As a result, the problem is very serious. Therefore ,solving the problem of the lack in teachers first, and students could get better education next.
