Birthright
.... Jake was considered the best in his field. He didn’t have a problem being around Callie again. He realized that he hadn’t handled things well before and he wanted her back. Callie was still upset about seeing Jake again when her world was turned upside down. Suzanne came to see her and asked questions about her past. Suzanne also had family pictures with her. There was a strong resemblance between them and Callie. She didn’t think there was any chance that she was Jessica, but the visit did raise questions for her. That night Callie drove to her parent’s house and spent hours going through papers. She discovered proof that she had been adopted when she was three months old. Callie was devastated that her parents had kept that from her. The next day, she had a talk with them and told them what she found. Her parents explained their reasoning for keeping the adoption a secret. Vivian and Elliot didn’t believe that there was a chance that Callie had been kidnapped. They also didn’t think what had happened then should matter to Callie now. Elliot did agree to help Callie get answers. Callie was upset about what she had learned, but she wanted to find out for sure if she was Jessica. She did tell Jake what was going on, and he said he would help her. They were getting along better and getting close again. Callie hired Lana to look into some things for her related to her search. While working on that, Lana started to spend time with Doug. She was really interested in him, and she asked him out. They started to date. Doug wasn’t happy about what was going on with Callie. He was worried that his mother would be hurt again. Callie, Jake, and their team continued to work at the site. There were people around town who weren’t happy about the dig because it put the construction workers out of work. Someone went to extreme measures to try to stop the dig. Callie’s SUV was vandalized. Dead bodies were discovered at the site. Lana’s office was burned down. A trailer at the dig site exploded. Callie figured that someone didn’t want her looking into the past and were doing those things to try to get her to leave town. Birthright was a long book with 465 pages. Most of what I discussed about the plot took place within the first 100 pages, so there was a lot more that happened during the book. This was a long, complex book with a lot going on in it. The book was very descriptive, which is normal for a Nora Roberts book. The plot was rather complicated, and there were some subplots as well. I didn’t have any trouble keeping the subplots straight. The book grabbed my attention right from the start. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put the book down. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. I really enjoyed this book. I thought that the parts that dealt with the dig were interesting. Birthright was a romance with some mystery and suspense in it. I thought that the mystery regarding what had happened in Callie’s past was the main focus of the book. All most all of the book dealt with Callie’s search for what had happened when she was a baby and her reactions to what she learned. She had her whole world turned upside down without warning. Callie hired Lana to do some investigation of a few leads. Callie and Jake did some investigating as well, and they were able to piece together what had happened. Doug wanted things to stay in the past, but he became involved in the investigation as well. The search really bothered someone who was trying to drive Callie out of town. There was also some mystery related to what happened at the dig site. The mystery in the book wasn’t really complex, but it wasn’t simple to figure out either. There were several suspenseful moments throughout the book. I never knew what would happen next. Callie and Jake started their relationship again after they started working together. They started off spending more time together and they became closer. Callie confided in Jake about what she learned about her past. Jake was determined to help her in her search. They eventually worked out what had gone wrong between them before. They did become involved sexually again. Lana was interested in Doug when she first met him. He was a bit shy, so she ended up making the first move, asking him out. They started dating. They also became sexually active. Suzanne and Jay got divorced several years after Jessica had been kidnapped. Once they found her, they started to spend some time together again. They finally worked through some issues they’d had with each other after the kidnapping. The relationship between Callie and Jake was the main romance in Birthright. I did enjoy that there was more than one couple in the book. I would have liked it if there had been a bit more about Lana and Doug. There were sexual situations and acts in some scenes of the book. Some of those scenes were very descriptive and steamy. There were only a few of those scenes, but they could offend some readers. People who don’t like to read about those things shouldn’t read this book. People who like romances with some mystery and suspense in them should give this book a try. Nora Roberts has written many books since her first book was published in the early 1980's. I have been reading her books for about two years now. I’ve really liked all of her books that I have read so far. She started out writing shorter romances for Silhouette Books and later branched out into writing longer romantic suspense books. She also writes a futuristic romantic suspense series as J.D. Robb. Those books are different from the ones she writes under her own name, but there are similarities. All of her books are well written, descriptive, and have characters that come to life. People who have enjoyed the J.D. Robb books may also like the Nora Roberts books. I started reading the In Death series first and then moved onto the Nora Roberts books. There were many characters in Birthright. Callie and Jake were the main characters and the most developed. There were several supporting characters. Since the book was long, there was time for those characters to be fairly well developed as well. There were still some characters that only turned up in one or two scenes that weren’t developed at all. The characters in the book came to life. I really liked the characters, especially Callie and Jake. CHARACTERS Callie Dunbrook - She was an archaeologist who was working on the dig in Woodsboro. She loved her work.
