Considering the inadequate deadline and having to paint almost the entire room upside down, suffering through every second, it is clear to see how he would have a few reasons not to show the enthusiasm everyone expected. One can only imagine how hard it must have been working toward the same strenuous aspiration year after year, suffering misery and anguish the whole way through. Not to mention the paint dripping off the ceiling into his face and the pains of being stationary for such a long time, developing goiters and other soreness. In fact, Michelangelo started his verse off with a statement of how much pain he was in. It started by saying, ”I’ve already frown a goiter from this toil as water swills the cats in Lombardy or any other country they might be, forcing my belly to hang under my chin.” It is easy to tell from just this one sentence that he did nit enjoy what he was doing. Actually, Michelangelo was not fond of painting in general. He considered himself a sculptor and would not have done the Sistine Chapel unless Julius II hadn’t ordered him to. He quoted soon after the sonnet, “I’m in no good place, nor am I a painter.” This one statement tell us a lot about Michelangelo’s way of thinking and how some people think this magnificent work was done in vain.
