Concert Report

...ts from movies featuring George Gershwin’s music. All of the music was composed by George Gershwin himself. Gershwin was famous for making many excellent Broadway musicals, then moving to the silver screen and performing dozens of scores. Finally, Gershwin’s most notable accomplishment was combining jazz and classical music to create a brand new style. The singers included Oleta Adams, Jon Hendricks, Cleo Laine, and Barbara Morrison. Among the many songs/compositions performed were: “I’ve Got A Crush On You”, “A Foggy Day”, “Love Is Here To Stay”, etc… Of the singers, my clear favorite was Oleta Adams. She had a marvelous voice that was totally flawless in the sense that it was smooth and clear. While the other singers were all amazing in their own rite, they (in my opinion due to old age) I could always detect some bumps in certain notes. I particularly liked Jon Hendricks’s “dubee dee doo doo ba dee… ” songs. They were unlike anything I ever heard before, but I sure enjoyed them. another song I particularly liked was “I’ve Got A Crush On You” performed by Cleo Laine. One thing I particularly liked about the music was that each instrument got its own time to shine. Each instrument went solo multiple times, and each one was great. Of all the instrument players, my favorite was Houston Person, the alto sax. He was simply amazing at playing the saxophone. Each one of his solos left my dumbstruck by his emotion and rhythm. Another instrument that I discovered I liked was the trombone. Although there were many times at very high notes that it began to squeak, when it was played well I loved it. One thing I never saw before was that the trombone player used a toilet-plunger type object to create very unique sounds from his instrument. Also, I loved the double bass solos. I saw the double bass played before but not by itself, so I never knew how I sounds; that changed today. Overall I really liked the concert. I never heard jazz live before until today and I loved it. The music made me feel in the way that classical music never made me...
