If the fish were to naturally die, its corpse would sink to the bottom of the ocean. Instead of just disintegrating the GM fish would start to litter the ocean floor and cover plant species. The remains would not be eaten due to the taste. This would result in plants having proteins blocked off. Tiny fish that lived in these plants and ate them would start to die out due to lack of food.
