... no better than a cartoonist for rumor columnist L’Oiseau (Wallace Shawn). An abundance of shots were taken of Hart spending a broad amount of his time stenciling in the local Selavy (c’est la vie) Cafe. To accompany him was his suicidal companion L’Oiseau and long time friend, a very drunk Ernest Hemingway (Kevin J. O’Connor). While scribbling an image of Hemingway on paper, Hart’s abandoned love, Rachel Stone (Linda Fiorentino) enters with her husband and influential businessman, Bertram Stone (John Lone). When Stone notices Hart’s enthrallment with Rachel, art versus business becomes a focal point early on. The conflicting worlds of art’s ideas in opposition to the conservatism of the business world sets the premises of the film. “Modernism” was a time for which the Lost Generation would fashion, construct, and write modern literature, art, music and attitudes. 1920s were such an essential influence for which would mold the future of what is now, the “modernists” must have been under extreme pressure. Rudolph not being completely serious used Hemingway as an example to show the public that even a famous writer resorted to booze in the struggle to survive. In fact, every character resorted to the suppressive effects of booze. Appearing in the background of several shots, the inebriated Hemingway is stumbling around only half allusive to his surroundings and mumbling famous lines of his work. With further analysis, the battle he has with famous writer F. Scott Fitzgerald can be picked up on. Cinematography adds an effect of an older film with its dominant color and selective shots of sepia and black and white. The antique effect adds to the whole Drama/Historical aspect, but all the vocal exchange shots that contain Hart and Rachel are no different than a present movie’s depiction of a scorned couple’s dialogue. The pace of the movie stayed at a consistent slow rate. There was no point in the movie in which action speed up the story. The addition of characters was what kept the plot crawling along.
