The old streets filled carriages and people with classic jobs like flower girls and handy men, and surrounded by old British houses, shows that the movie is set in the early 20th century (I believe around the 1910s). The clothes that people wear also show their status or class in society. The rich and educated are dressed in rich garments which create a contrast against the streets. An example of this is in the beginning with Colonel Pickering’s black suit standing out against Eliza’s rags. The poor wear old rags and aren’t as attention grabbing as the rich, wearing strong or bright-colored garments. The environment also shows the traits and the future of the characters. Professor Henry Higgins’ house has numerous help, which shows his wealth. His office is filled with equipment and books, which shows his thorough knowledge of his field in phonetics. When Eliza came in to ask for Higgins’ help in old dirty clothes that she tried to use to say that she was rich, she was brought to her room when Higgins agreed. The room was filled with white and pearl materials, from the wall to the bed sheets. This shows that she will be cleaned with the impurities of the street, like her horrid language and manners. This shows that she will eventually be a lady. The Ascot race box is another place, which characterizes the people. The rich all wore white, black, and grey, which shows their conforming thinking and attitude. They all move in unison which shows they fit in with each other’s company. When Eliza arrived, she...
