Everyday Use
... this story was written, some of the nations African-American’s culture was changing. This change gave some African-Americans an excuse to change who they were, into something else. They were basically jumping on the bandwagon. So, of course with a change in personality, comes a change in taste and style. Dee’s personality change was very evident when she changed her name to Wangero. Even though her mom named her Dee just because that was the name that she wanted, she still changed it. Dee said the name came from the time of Slavery. It was almost like she was ashamed of the name that was given to her. She was more concerned of what the people around her thought of where her name came from. Then there was the aspect of what Dee’s mom had at her house that would be astheticaly pleasing at her own place. It was cool back in the 70’s to show where you came from. It is almost like she wanted to show where she came from, but not proud of it. Dee took Polaroid pictures of Maggie and her mom. Every picture that she took though, had to have the house in the background. Then she would be able to go back and show everyone where she came from or her roots. When she came into the house, Dee saw the butter churning device and loved that. Dee even described that “I can use the churn top as centerpiece for the alcove table”. This shows that she already had in mind what her mom had at her house, that she wanted. Then after they all ate, Dee went into Maggie’s room and noticed the quilts. Dee was estatic about these. She knew exactly where she going to put the quilts also. Dee was more concerned about how it was a conversation piece, being what it was made out of, than taking pride in where it came from. Even though Maggie would not stand up for herself, she would have appreciated and cherished it more so than Dee. The mom drew the line when it came to those two quilts. She even told Dee to pick out different quilts, but Dee insisted that it was to be those two. On one hand it show great importance to Dee, seeing what it was made from. On the other hand it also showed great importance to the mom because of where it came from and who she knew it was going to. When Maggie was to wed, it would be passed down to her and she would cherish it for the rest of her life. As for Dee, when the trend passed, the quilt would become nothing but an old blanket to her. This comparison is significant because this shows how important heritage is to some people. Though, Maggie and her mom are not very intelligent or attractive people they do not change who they are through the course of their life. The reason behind this is that they know and belie...
