That is why he advised the faculty “on this commencement day, we have nothing to take much pride.” The students of Brown University’s graduating class also fall victim to Neusner’s direct and indirect criticisms. In his article, Neusner’s feelings towards the students are far less vague than his attitude towards the faculty. Neusner offers no apologies when telling the students, “ You will be ill advised to demand praise for what does not deserve it.” He seems to take the position that students are spoiled, arrogant and seem to think that good grades are due to them, regardless of their bad work ethic or study habits. Towards the end of his article, Neusner warns the students, not to take the same attitudes they’ve displayed in school out in the real world. He tells the students that college has been unrealistic and that now they have to “ unlearn the lies we taught you.” Neusner’s arguments offer no facts or examples for the reader to draw upon.
