The majority of government officials have forgotten about social conscience. Many people, on the other hand, no longer condemn graft but even condone it for their own good. The non- power-holders believe in the corruptibility of public officials. For in their minds, given the same opportunity, they would do the same. Their resentment essentially amounts to envy of those blessed with opportunities for private gain. Get-rich- quick-madness has become a craze. Indeed, as one columnist observed politics here is not a way of life, it is a way to earn a living. Definitions Graft -It is the misuse of power with corruption as its cause. The making of money in connection with city or government business in a dishonest manner is an example of graft. Corruption -The moral degradation which is the result of graft; the act of making, or the process of being made evil or wicked, one's way or attitude or value judgment. Graft and corruption both in the private and in the government sectors cannot be totally eliminated but can only be minimized. One reason for this is the acceptance of graft and corruption by society as a way of life. This social cancer is very evident even in the simple exercise of power. The high cost of living and poor moral character and values make it hard for an individual to resist the lures of graft and corruption.
