Racial Profiling is discrimination of colored individuals based on the notion that they are more likely to commit deviant acts due to the color of their skin and without any other reasonable explanation. Racial profiling is committed in three different rationales. It can be systematic in which it is a usual practice for a particular police department or a particular unit. It can be public safety based in which it is enacted according to the preference of particular officers. Or it can be based on the relationship between the police and the community. This often involves a neighborhood with a predominately white police force and a community population comprised almost completely of minorities. In order to deal with racial profiling I believe that each cop should make note of the racial and ethnic background of each particular person stopped as well as to the reasoning they were stopped. A record of predominately colored people being stopped for minute reasons should be sufficient reason to believe that racial profiling is at least a possibility to explain the outcomes. As such, it is at this time that police officers should take cultural sensitivity classes in order to ensure that they perform their duties in a professional and most importantly, an unbiased manner. Both Washington and Dubois wanted the same thing for African Americans, “First-class citizenship,” but their methods for obtaining it were different.
