Australian Representation, in Australian written plays
...ustralian society. This can be seen in both Blackrock and Brilliant Lie’s. For example in Blackrock # Scene 1 Page 3 Line 12 RICKO Bet youse did. Spider’s still round, eh? And Wazza? # Scene 3 Page 11 Lines 5-16 JARED Get real…He’s a bro. You got to be there…” # Scene 1 Page 4 Line 17 RICKO Smart bastard, eh? He’s alright this prick. Colloquialism is also seen in Brilliant Lies # Act 1 Page 6 Line 14 GARY Boobs popping right out of her dress. # Act 2 Page 73 Line 3 SUSY …we turn thirteen and we’re just two tits on legs… Another aspect of both plays is alcohol abuse by most of the characters in Blackrock and the abuse of alcohol by Brian in Brilliant Lies. For example: Brilliant Lies # Act 1 Page 23 Line 19 (S.D) …has been drinking too much and is slurring his speech. # Act 1 Page 25 Line 10 BRIAN: And now I am a penniless drunk. Blackrock # Scene 6 (I would say most of it is a testament to the bad effects of alcohol). # Scene 6 Page21 Line 29 RICKO You want to get us another beer, Tiff? Male dominated society. In both plays men are the perpetrators of a crime (the Rape of Tracy in Blackrock). The essence of Brilliant Lies is how women are treated in the modern Australian workforce (furthermore how women are viewed in society generally). My pet hate would be how women are used by the media (what happened to the women’s movement?!?!). Take television shows such as Getaway and the Great Outdoors where beautiful women walk down perfect beaches selling themselves as well as the location (it literally makes me sick to the stomach to watch). I cant believe in this modern era with more women entering the workforce that other women subject themselves to such degradation!! You see the girls in the high school education system who sits in class twirling their hair around their fingers and giggling and it makes you wonder where the women who burned their bras in the 70's retired to? Maybe they just retired into the oblivion that is suburbia and became soccer mums? Or maybe they entered the corporate world and never had the chance to produces heiresses to the feminine throne. I read an article the other day written be a woman who claimed that although she joined the original movement she found that in her later years she found herself alone, furthermore she regretted "submitting" to the movement. She regretted the fact that she never had a family. Maybe I am just naive in my youth but I find a problem with this! When I think about my future I see more of a corporate path then one filled with children in the confines that is suburbia. However it is all reassuring to know that at least I have the choice! I can choose to stay at home or I can enter the corporate world. At least I can study biology and history, not just h...
