Community Service
...earned by the teens as they work through their experiences as a community service member. As a result of the skills acquired through service, the students will learn a greater self respect, increased compassion for others and a broadened sense of understanding and tolerance towards those in need, those who are different than they are and those who cannot always help themselves. Personal growth will be inevitable and immeasurable through this humbling experience of servitude. The community service program will contribute greatly to the future success of these teens as they make the transition after graduation into adulthood, college, the workforce and independence. Community service will also benefit the individual by providing increased levels of care. Students will have the opportunity to chose to participate in programs that provide blankets and coats to the homeless, meals for seniors, assistance to the handicapped and mentoring for children in need. By adding to the volunteer force in these programs, not only will increased levels of care will be attained, but higher levels of activity can be achieved individually for those being helped. Increased levels of activity through this one on one interaction will provide improved emotional, physical and psychological health for the individuals receiving care. Community members and individuals will also benefit through their participation by increasing their sense of involvement, pride and knowledge that through this program they, too, are contributing to the growth of these students and furthering the development of this program. By fostering these feelings in the individual, participants will be given a greater hope in their own future as well as the world around them. Community service will not only benefit the student and the individual, it will benefit the community as a whole. Student forces will provide more manpower to community programs resulting in the increased ability to serve all the needs of their community. Through community service, students will have the opportunity to positively impact environmental growth, safety and development through the study and implementation of environmental management, protection and conservation strategies. The community will benefit through programs that will provide increased economic potential, aesthetic appeal and beautification through trash pick-up, repair, planting and neighborhood up-keep programs.
