Is tolerance always good?
...ance has reached and surpassed its peak, and this may catalyze to some diabolical reactions which may be more devastating than if the person had not tolerated at all. However, one thing remains crystal clear; Intolerance breeds intolerance. As ironic as it may seem, tolerance can sometimes, be detrimental to us. when seen in a different light to what has been mentioned above, tolerance actually hinders the goal of us achieving something and this is the negative side of it. An basic example would be that in classroom. A classmate is constantly being disruptive and you have to tolerate with it. It hinders you from fully concentrating in class because you are tolerating him. But of course there is a limit to the tolerance. If the classmates goes overboard then its no use tolerating anymore as we have to find a different solution to handle it and that is to voice out your views t the classmates himself telling him his faults so as to make the situation better for everyone. Sometimes tolerance can depend on the time factor. If we tolerate too much for a long period of time, we are bottling up our feelings of patience and endurance and it causes a detrimental effect altogether and we are left with no choice but to face up with the problem. If it’s for a short period of time, it is better to tolerate because if there are uncertainties and the individual is not able to exercise tolerance, the situation would become worse. Thus to achieve a more desirable outcome, we should tolerate as it eliminates the chances of the situation getting out of hand. When we tolerate we clear the doubts easily. However, it does not stop there, for tolerance is needed in a world where people of different origins; race and religion live or want to live together, in peace. Racial or religious tolerance means the state of equilibrium or harmony in a community or group of people of many races and religion, whereby the racial or religious differences, stereotyping and prejudices are not taken into account in making decisions affecting the group as a whole, by any of the constituent racial or religious element. For example, if a woman wears the tudung and a man grows a beard for religious reasons, these should be taken as matters of "private space". In this context, racial or religious tolerance would mean accepting the woman and the man as they are, and not regarding their individual actions as infringing upon the "common space" or trying to be exclusive. The dividing line between "private space" and "common space" should not be defined by the Government, but should be left to evolve naturally over time whereby people will come to understand and tolerate one another's racial or religious differences through public interaction and education. In our world today there are mixed, full of diverse cultures and societies. Thus acceptance is the key. The problem lies in the state of equilibrium (racial or religious tolerance) being shattered by racial stereotyping or prejudices perpetrated by certain events affecting social cohesion the lesson learnt here is that racial or religious tolerance cannot be taken for granted, as such tolerance is based on trust and confidence. Trust and confidence usually take years to build, but they can be easily destroyed within days. Take Singapore for example. Singapore is made up of a multi-racial and secular society. Thus everyone is given free will to practice the religion of his or her choice. One of the factors to racial harmony in Singapore is individual awareness. Secondly Singapore is a meritocratic society, in other wards everyone gets an equal chance to success as religion and race is not taken into account. In conclusion, exercising tolerance means being open-minded enough to embrace the beliefs and opinions of others. For a society to enjoy racial and religious harmony, it means that different ethnic and religious groups are interacting in full and perfect agreement with one another. There is a sense of complete rapport and kinship, where individuals not only share common values with the rest of society, but also actively cultivate their own cultural heritage.
