Vegetarians have their own food pyramids which outline various food choices and food groups that, if eaten in the right quantities, form the foundation of a healthy diet. Sometimes they have to find alternatives for animal based foods especially the vegans. Soy milk, rice milk or even almond milk can replace cow’s milk. Eggs can be replaced by commercial egg replacers which are made of potato starch. Cheese from cow’s milk can b4e replaced by soy cheese or nutritional yeast flakes. They also modify common dishes like spaghetti with tofu instead of meatballs. Vegetarians also search for alternatives for animal based nutrients. Meat is the primary source of protein but soy products, legumes, lentils, nuts and whole grain can also be good sources of plant based protein. Calcium are found on milk and milk products but fuit juices, tofu enriched with calcium, spinach, kale and broccoli are better sources of protein. Vitamin B-12 is found almost exclusively in animal products but vegetarians formulated cereals and soy products fortified with vitamin B-12 to suffice the vitamin B-12 vegetarians need. There are a lot of comparative study conducted between vegetarians and meat lovers on both their benefits and detriments. Vegetarians have lower rates of some cancers, cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure and type2 diabetes while apparently meat lovers have higher rates. It is likely for a vegetarian to be over weight because plant based foods are low in saturated fat and cholesterol. Vegetarians tend to be more physically active than non vegetarians. However, vegetarian diets may fall short in certain nutrients unless they are carefully planned. There are some possible risks of vegetarian eating such as osteoporosis for they eat less calcium and milk products, iron deficiency anemia, emaciation or slowed growth and even low protein digestability.
