Scott requested a direct commission to captain. When President Jefferson eventually did increase the size of the army on May 8, 1808 Scott was made a captain. At 22 years old Scott was a captain in the light artillery. Scott went at recruiting his company with zeal, he also had 2 enlisted men and a couple of musicians for the traveling recruitment effort. Scott enjoyed training but looked at the recruiting as a chore. Scott was assigned to General James Wilkinson. Scott ended up disgusted with the Army and Wilkinson and resigned his commission and Headed Back to Virginia. In Petersburg Scott decided his decision was hasty and wrote a letter to cancel his resignation which was accepted by the Secretary of War Eustis. Scott’s earlier tirades about Wilkinson did not subside and he repeated them to the wrong person. Scott was brought up on charges “conduct unbecoming” and “embezzlement”. As per usual in the military, the court decide they didn’t care what the charges or the evidence were so they convicted him on another charge “Un-officer like conduct” and dismissed the embezzlement charge. Scott knew his conviction would adversely affect his chances for promotion and resigned again. With war coming against the British Scott reentered the army as an aide to General Wade Hampton. En-route to Washington the ship they were in ran aground and Scott set off with a small number of soldiers and they met with some drunk militia who were excited to have an officer and the excitement was growing regarding the war. Scott arrived in Baltimore the day before riots broke out . The frenzy of real war was on. Sympathizers were getting there houses burned and newspapers were being destroyed for their sympathy with the British. Scott was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and his new assignment was second in command of the 2nd artillery The commander was a South Carolina Colonel named George Izard. But that didn’t last long as Scott sought action and he got it, however he was captured by Indians and would have lost his life then if British officers had not intervened. His incarceration was short lived and soon through a prisoner exchange he was soon on his way back to Washington where he received another promotion to Full Colonel. Scott was sent to Fort Niagra and was entrusted with the attack of Fort George where he was heroic in keeping the fort from being destroyed as the British retreated. Scott was called to consult with president Madison, his first official presidential consultation. During the battle of Lundy’s Lane Scott was hit with a musket ball which passed through his shoulder and shattered the bone. Scott recovered in Geneva New York where he was again promoted to Major General (honorary). On February 11, 1815 the war of 1812 was over when a shipped sailed into New York harbor with the declaration. Scott went to Europe for a three year trip however he returned after only 9 months. This worked week because he then married in 1817 and had his first child in 1818 the family eventually had three daughters and two sons.
