Some may argue that we cannot cross the bridge until we come to it,so let us concentrate on our way instead.the future can take care of itself.As it is their task to cross,let them do it.While There is some truth in the reasoning that we should fend for ourselves and leave the following generations to follow suit.But what about the paths we have destroyed in our wake?we have to compensate for those losses by providing our future generations with viable replacements.For eg.we,in our bid for increased energy utilisation have depleted the existing natural energy resources like coal to the level of extinction.So if it is not our duty to replace it with the solution of solar energy and likes,then on whose shoulder does this responsibility rests?We cannot be absolved of our responsibilities merely by shrugging off the blame. In the end, I would suggest that it is unwise to neglect the future for the present.What may be easily remediable today might snowball into a massive inevitable catastrophe tommorow.Also,allocoting funds for future use on the cost of ignoring vital necessaties today will be detrimental to our present generations.Each country should take care how its budget is being utilized so as to tend to each aspect properly,with the poorer ones laying the stress on present necessities and affluent ones allocating more funds for further research and development,so as to solve both purposes-present survival and future benefits. I think the statement is too generalized because social problems encompass a wide range of things; at one extreme they can include trifle things like smoking in public and at the other extreme they may involve extreme things like racial discriminations which can lead to genocides. Some of the social issues become non-issues when their ill effects are compared to the benefits given by research while the benefits given by research will look like an unnecessary overhead in face of the consequences of another social problem.
