You need to add new facts, new issues, or new perspectives to the discussion. You must be able to stand your ground when challenged and be able to challenge others. You must be able to "back-up" any statements you make with facts and analysis. Your comments must reflect analytic thinking. Your recommendations need to be definitive. For example, never say anything along the lines of: "They should hire a consultant or do some additional research." Think of your instructor as the CEO of the company. Your job is to provide insights and recommendations to the CEO. It is the responsibility of each student to keep track of how you are doing on class participation by checking with the professor several times during the semester. If you arrive to class late, after attendance has been taken, it is the student's responsibility to make sure that the professor does not record you as being absent.
