It also discusses the role played by the Malay mass media with regards to the immigrant issues and attention has been focused on editorial columns which very often air their views and comments of what has been happening since the coming of the immigrants in Malaya. Chapter II discusses the emergence of racialism in modern Malay literature. There are two aspects of this background. The first is with regard to the stages of the racial conflicts that is influenced by the social, economic and political factors. The second is with regard to the role of the religious group, Malay school teachers and the journalists that became the main activities. It thus reflects the political consciousness and commitment of Malay writers as a whole. Chapter III traces the social integration as the themes of the Malay short stories written before the 13 May incident. The first part of this chapter deals with a short history of the growth and the development of Malay short stories as a background to the main thrust of the study. This is followed by Chapter IV, which traces the main themes of Malay short stories written after the 13th May incident. The common themes were of course social and political issues. The manifestation of the writers' attitude in the said short stories are emphasised more by their ideas and suggestions which according to them could help to break down racial barriers among the Malays and the Chinese.
