It is because, Chinese people believe that the three-divergent road has a lot of bad spirit and the mirror will help reflecting back the evils also the monster will scare them away. That’s not all, Chinese people believe that on the first day of Chinese New Year, you cannot swear and never sweep your house or do not go to work, otherwise you will have to work hard through that year and receive bad luck. Furthermore, if you are having bad luck, you should avoid going to any funeral because it is believed that you will get sick or even worse. According to the story in the book, having been sent medicines mistakenly was also considered as bad luck because Chinese people believed seriously that they were cursed to get sick. Nevertheless, there are also some good superstitions as well, such as you should pay respect to your ancestors by burning toy furniture and utensils so that your ancestor would be able to use them in the spirit world. Chinese people are always strict about paying respect to their ancestor because they believe that they are very grateful and they will help them in doing businesses or having a peaceful family too. One of the famous national celebrations of Chinese culture is the “Moon Cake Festival”. I was told by my father that the legend of this festival started long time ago when the Mongol had conquered China, they took away all the army so that Chinese people would not be able to rebel. On the other hand, Chinese people were planning secretly and they sent messages to each other by hiding small pieces of paper in the moon cake. They had an appointment that when there was a full moon, every Chinese would stand up and fight against the Mongol. Following that, the rebel was successful because China had more citizens so the Mongol had to move out.
