...rgy prices. The cost of producing mined uranium into the enriched compound that is used for the fuel of nuclear power plants is very complex and expensive. Millions of dollars are spent to making the uranium pure and to produce just one set of fuel rods. The uranium fuel rods last several years before replacement is necessary this does not offset the million dollar price. If it did we has consumers would not see increases in our electric bill. Nuclear power plants produce radioactive waste that is very dangerous, and can not simply be thrown away. The used rods are very radioactive and will stay that way for hundreds of years. The radioactive waste is stored under ground in sealed containers. These containers are made of reinforced concrete and lead shielding which makes them seem invulnerable. Again Mother Nature has a way of destroying what we see invulnerable which would release this very dangerous material. This would in effect contaminate the ground and any underground water supplies. Exposure to radiation is known to cause death, cancer, sterility, and many other health problems. To produce nuclear power the use of unstable radioactive atoms are used to release large amounts of energy. Uranium is a radioactive element, and is used as the main fuel for the nuclear reactors. The Uranium in the form rods react with other rods which causes the atoms to decay and that releases heat.
