...k eyed queen" "a tear burst from the sleepers eyes" and "at furious speed he rode" these are examples of emotions that are carried onto the reader with the carefully chosen word choice that longfellow used to give us the images as if we are experiencing it ourself.in the first stanza is where the settng of the mood is set in the second stanza is where we are lead to realise that the slave is dreaming of his native land in the 3rd,4th,5th & 6th stanza we understand that the slave is just dreaming about being free having freedom and feeling like a king and being released from being a slave in the 7th stanza its basically his homeland is calling to him in his dream and he can hear it calling which is why he smiles. The rhythm in each stanza helps each idea thats been put forward. in the last stanza it brings the sense that the reader has been taken away from the freedom and bought back to the harsh reality of what has happen to the slave, it takes away the rhythm that the other stanzas have shown so it can make you realise that the slave is dead. in the last stanza longfellow mentions the word death in the context he means the act of dying,termination of life. imagery is used constantly throughout the poem. he describes the niger im simplistic but yet in depth detail. by mentioning things like the plain where taminrid grew, the roofs of the caffre huts, the ocean veiw & the forests with their myriad tongues.. this imagery is also accompained by personification and the use of similes such as the "Like the red blood flag", "like a glorious roll of drums" in reference to the slaves horse galloping. the fact that he refers to the niger as "lordly", the forests "shouting"of liberty & the blast from the desert "cried aloud" with a voice so wild and free. these are the examples of personification of inatemate objects having human-like qualities. another technique that Longfellow has incorporated is the use of rhyme to assist the rhythm of the poem. lo...
