Throughout the movie, John’s illness becomes more serious. He comes to believe that he is being recruited to work for top secret government to figure out codes, since he does have the ability to memorize numbers, and figure out that of which only a genius would be able to figure out. He is a mathematical genius. High intelligence levels, especially dealing with numbers and mathematics, correlate with a high probability of schizophrenia, as well as autism. There are two other main characters that exist in John’s world and not the real world. They are a little girl and a “bad guy,” the one who is out to get John. One of the characters who is greatly affected by John’s illness is his student, and later wife, Alicia. She loves John, but hates to see him suffer so. He comes home late from work, sometimes in the middle of the night, and since his imagined business is “top-secret,” he cannot let her know where he has been. He is always anxious and disturbed, and often would get angry at her. Once they have a child, he nearly leaves her to drown in the tub, due to hallucinations. Alicia tries so hard to get him help. She brings him to a doctor and gets him checked out, and eventually he is treated with electro-convulsive therapy. He also ...
