According to Joella, her family was never a normal, Australian family. Her father, Hayden, was too old to be properly recognised as anyone’s father, and her mother, Sylvie was too young and crazy to be properly recognised as anyone’s mother. The children’s family was always on the move, because Hayden has this idea that being constantly on the move would be a safer way of living. Hayden and Sylvie did try to be normal by living in a house that was relatively close to the school. Peter and Liane won many prizes and distinctions, and Joella owned plenty of pets, but Sylvie decided it wasn’t working. This caused her to move out and leave the three children with Hayden. However, after Sylvie’s departure, Hayden began acting very strange. He pulled the children out of school for camping trips, teaching them survival skills were they were not necessarily required. He even attempted to teach Pater how to drive, although he knew fine and well that he was far too young at the age of fifteen. Peter hated this new lifestyle and ran away a couple of times.
