Many years later, she is found in one of the poorest neighborhoods of the city dead. Rosa Trueba – she is known in the story as Rosa the beautiful. She is the oldest among the fifteen children of Nivea and Severo del Valle. She has extraordinary quality of beauty. She has green hair, transparent skin and yellow eyes. She is described as a human mermaid because she greatly resembles one. Before she died, she is engaged to Esteban Trueba. she died of poison and Clara even predicted her death. Miguel – he is Amanda’s younger brother and the lover of Alba. He first saw Alba when she was born while hiding in the closet and after eighteen years, he sees her again and falls in love with her. Their relationship doesn’t die. He is also a revolutionary who joined the guerillas after the the military coup. Jaime – he is one of Esteban and Clara Trueba’s twin boys. He is the brother of Blanca. Jaime studied medicine and devoted his life to helping the poor. Nicolas – he is the twin brother of Jaime and one of Esteban and Clara’s twin boys. He is also the brother of Blanca. He inherited Uncle Marcos’s penchant for travel and invention. He also became interested in pursuing spiritual enlightenment to which resulted embarrassment to Esteban Trueba, therefore made him leave the country and hide forever. Nana – she is the housekeeper of the del Valle house. She is also the caretaker of the fifteen children of Severo and Nivea del Valle. Nana is especially close to Clara. When Severo and Nivea died in a car accident, she moved to Clara and Esteban Trueba’s house and there she became the housekeeper. When she saw how close Clara and Ferula is, she became jealous and tried to take Clara away from Ferula. Pancha – she is the peasant girl in Tres Marias. She is one of the women who were raped by Esteban Trueba. She was taken in Esteban’s house as a housekeeper and then thrown out when she became pregnant of Esteban Trueba’s son. Dona Ester Trueba – she is the mother of Esteban and Ferula Trueba. In her youth, she fell in love with and married the lower class Trueba. the money she brought to the marriage quickly ran out, her husband died, and she is addlicted by severe arthritis which confines her to a wheelchair. She dies shortly after Esteban has finished restoring Tres Marias. My Favorite character is Alba Trueba. When she was born, they said the “the stars are just right” and she was born feet first which makes her special. Everyone trusted her even Esteban. She is the ideal women. She never feared fear itself and acted like she is equal to men which are not in that generation. She brought out the kindness out of Esteban and I liked that in her. III. Events Literally, the story of the House of the Spirits began in the last chapter of the book. It is said in the last part that after Alba was out of the detention, she convinced her grandfather, Esteban Trueba, to help her write the del Valle-Trueba family story to release all of their anger and regrets so that they can move on. With that, it started the book. The connection of the events to the problem is that they make the problem from whole to personal. The problem of society division is one of the main problems of the world. In the story, the division problem is being brought to Esteban’s domain and becomes his main problem in him. Since one of the major characters is Esteban Trueba and he is the only man to be in that section, most of the problems come from him. The other girls who are major characters are affected by the problem and they are the one who suffer and try to fix it. IV. Problem and Goal The main problem is the society division. The major characters from the House of the Spirits come from two opposing classes: the landed aristocracy and the peasants. Most of the characters in the novel belong to one of these two classes. Essentially, the only other class distinction that might be drawn is that occupied by those in civil service. Peasants can join the police force or the army and gain access to education and can rise from their poor state which is the case of Esteban Garcia. The del Valle and Trueba families represent the land-owning upper-class people, while the Garcia’s represent the peasants. The two classes come into conflict because the upper class owns the land and the lower class works on. In rural areas like Tres Marias where there is no sufficient literacy among the residents there, the upper class take advantage of their illiteracy and control al...
