After Archer confesses his love to Ellen, he and May still get married. As time goes by Archer begins to forget Ellen but when he sees her again in Newport, he decides that he Is still in love with her, so Ellen tells him that she will stay in New York if and only he knows that nothing can go on between them. But then Ellen leaves anyways back to Europe because of her grandmother. May then announces that she is having a baby. Then, a long time passes by and May and Archer have three kids, and then May dies of pneumonia. In the end of the story, it is neither a sad nor happy ending, Archer just remains as he is, in his apartment, he never again reunites with Ellen. He stays with the memories of Ellen.
