Negro by Langston Hughes
... negros have a history and a civilization of their own. in the first stanza the poet emphasises his identity, "I am a Negro". he goes on to describe his physical being and there isno embarrasment whatsoever to describe himself as "Black as the Night is Black". thid differs from the normal norm at that time when the negros were ashamed of their colour. the word negro itself was said to be degratory to them. but here Hughes proudly calls himself black and a negro. This shows pride in whoever he is. In the second stanza, Hughes goes back in history to the time whn his poeple were slaves, from the time of Julius Caesar to George Washington. this shows the civilisation that the negroes have gone through. in the third stanza the poet discusses the physical work the negroes have been doing. they have helped built the pyramids and also the big buildings in America. the fourth stanza they have not...
