Lily had many secrets that she hid from August but as a she felt a bond forming between them she knew what she had to do. She had to tell August everything, because no matter how many excuses that Lily made up the truth still stood. Lily could never be as close to August as she wanted to be because there were boundaries; such as the truth. No matter how close two people appear to be, without honesty they can never have a true friendship. Lily and Rosaleen had a good, honest friendship because they felt comfortable talking with each other about anything. That is how open relationships and friendship have to be in order to last. Lily and Zach had a close friendship because they were honest with each other, they were able to talk openly about everything from difficult topics like racism to a book that they had both just read. Lily was also a good friend to August because after she found out that August had been lying to her, she was able to forgive her and stay friends with her.
