When you look back at these facts you see why some people say that colonisation was actually a stepping stool for democracy, where the people get to rule the city state how they want. There is evidence to show that the aristocratic rulers actually ruled quite well, but more frequently there own interests became more important to them, often this resulted in violence and incontinent amongst the lower class citizens. The peasants became too poor, they couldn’t afford to live in their homes anymore, they where downtrodden, and victims of a cruel, selfish leader, the peasants needed there own land. There was not enough land to grow enough crop for everybody, and often the land was not fertile enough for the poor Greek farmers, Importing goods was difficult because of the geography of Greece, and because of the limited transportation. Another result of this relative overpopulation was that small farmers became very poor. This was because either only the oldest son inherited the land, which forced the other sons to find another way of living, or because all sons got a piece of land which was really small and hardly enough to support them. Often they were forced to loan things, which was a threat to their independence. You can see why they decided to explore the Northern Aegean in hope for new land.
