Execution is a very real punishment rather than some form of "rehabilitative" treatment. The criminal is made to suffer in proportion to the offence, as in the logical old fashioned principal of "lex talens" (an eye for an eye). The bible even prescribes death for the crimes of murder and many other crimes, including kidnapping and witchcraft. Family members and loved ones are often eased by this punishment because they know the criminal was punished in the worst way, some even believe that a punishment worse then injecting lethal fluids is necessary. The opposition to the death penalty might say that there are more effective ways for punishing a person convicted of a capital crime. As for example, the criminal could be sentenced to life in jail rather then his life forcefully taken. This idea has been meditated on, but can you imagine how expensive it would be to maintain a human life until their natural death? That’s paying for three meals a day and housing! That money will come straight from the working class’s pockets. Not to mention, prisons are already over crowded, by 16%, so are we going to continue to dole out our money to also more build facilities? Other opponents might argue, that capital punishment doesn’t have a detterent effect and therefore is useless and is just a “legal” way to do what the murderers have done.
