dulcee et decorum ets by wilfred owem

...quote also displays the impact war has on soldiers by describing the mental and physical state they are in. As the poem continues Owen uses other techniques like metaphors to reinforce the pain and suffering the soldiers are going through. Throughout “Dulcee Et Decorum Est” Owen uses metaphors to enhance his imagery, by describing things more effectively. One example of this is; “Dim through the misty panes and thick green light, as under a green sea I saw him drowning.” This quote describes a man choking to death from gas, but Owen compares it to a man drowning under a green sea, the gas being the sea. As drowning is such a horrible way to die this quote helps us realise how horrible and brutal this would have been. The quote describes the gas smothering him like water would be taking away his air so this quote is very effective. Although this quote is effective Owen enhances the quote with; “He plunges at me guttering, choking, drowning.” This horrific image immediately adds onto the idea of the soldier drowning as the words guttering, choking, drowning are all words we would relate to water. These words are all related to drowning and set of negative images. This is a very good word choice by Owen. These two quotes strengthen the negative effect of war and its circumstances, death. The first verification we see of this is; “Men marched asleep” This quote is very good evidence of rhythm which at this point is relatively slow. This quote is effective in displaying a slow rhythm as the word choice marched asleep displays that the men are marching but the they are going slow it Is as if they are sleeping and are sleep walking. This next quote that displays a slow rhythm is “Drunk with fatigue, deaf even to the hoots” The words “Drunk with fatigue” is untimely effective in displaying a slow rhythm as they reinforce the quote, “Men marched asleep” as they both relate to exhaustion. As the men are so exhausted they appear to be swaying around as if they were intoxicated with alcohol , but this is just because they are exhausted, so the word intoxicated strengthens the idea of tiredness and a slow rhythm. The first stanza also uses words like “Sludge” and “trudge” which enhance the idea of slowness, as these words give the image of men getting stuck in think mud. At the start of the stanza two, we immediately see a differe...
