Geography Assignment - bushfires case study
...rk Bushfires Bushfires that are burning out of control, like the KNP bushfires of 2003, create enormous stress for communities that are in the path of them. The harsh reality is that it in the worst weather conditions, even with firefighters and volunteers at hand fighting the fire to protect property and lives, little can be done to stop a firestorm’s advancement. For the few unlucky people that have lost their home to a fire, the aftermath can be demoralizing, as family possessions are lost, sometimes even the family pet, are gone forever. This can create an enormous sense of loss. Being put out of place and owning nothing but the clothes you are wearing and the few possessions that you may have taken with you can cause great astonishment. The Kosciusko National Park bushfire was so tremendous, yet luckily, only one house was destroyed. The fire had destroyed the home, and unfortunately, all of the belongings of the person who lived in it. Police had evacuated Thredbo the night before the much-publicized Blues Festival was scheduled to take place. 3000 people had been estimated to turn up. Remarkably, no lives were lost in NSW and property damage had been kept to a minimum. Only one residence was destroyed. A weekender and a holiday lodge were lost as were several farm sheds and countless fences. Stock losses were minimal although graziers already affected by the drought period felt pasture losses. This is so because only one residence was destroyed in the fire. Apart from the residence that was destroyed, there were a few farms sheds and countless fences destroyed in the blaze. The actual economic cost because of the blaze was between $100,000 and $10,000,000, which isn’t really that much compared to other bushfires that have occurred in other places around Australia and around the world. The Environmental impacts because of the Kosciusko National Park bushfires There were innumerous trees burnt down because of the 164 spot fires going in the Kosciusko National Park. Many of these fires were in very remote areas of the National Park, where it was too dangerous to drop firefighters because of the severe blazes. A line crew gathers shovels and axes to make a trench to stop the oncoming forest fire. They must build it before the fire reaches them. An analysis of responses of individuals, community groups and various government levels. Generally, the overall responses of individuals, community groups and various government levels were good. The firefighters were at the park, doing all that they could for over a month; the individuals had fled their homes, taking what belongings they could muster with them, fleeing to nearby townships that were in range of them. There were over 20 different agencies and organi...
