Gain insight relative to Peter Drucker’s views on the “Next Society” and what implications this may have for China. 6. Gain greater insight from Peter Drucker on how to deal with these and other issues. SECTION ONE – GLOBALIZATION & CHINA UNIT ONE – CHINA AND WTO This Unit is an extensive review of China’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) and will comprise the major percentage of the first several Units of the curriculum. Major topics covered in this Unit will include; China’s Accelerating Domestic Reforms in the areas of: Legal and Administrative Reforms, Trade and Human Rights, Growth of the Private Sector, and Local Protectionism as They Relate to China. A Summary of the US-Bilateral WTO Agreement (February 2000) and its implications for Chinese businesses will also be reviewed. Other topics in this Unit will be updated as the situation in China and WTO evolves. Speakers from various Chinese industries and government agencies will also be invited to express their views. Students should review Panitchpakdi & Clifford, China and WTO, Chapters 3, 4, & 5, in preparation for this Unit. UNIT TWO – CHINA AND WTO – CROSSING THE BRIDGE This Unit continues to review China and the WTO and the import and export opportunities WTO presents to Chinese companies. UNIT THREE – GLOBALIZATION, A CASE STUDY This Unit explores one Chinese company’s experience with globalization (Alcer). Key issues the students will review include; Six Trends that Characterize the New Business Century, Strategies for the Internet Age, An Outline for a New Organizational Model, “Innovalue” – A New Basis for Competitiveness, and Different Approaches to Globalization. Students should review Shih, Growing Global, Chapters 1, 2 and 3, in preparation for this Unit. UNIT FOUR – MULTINATIONAL STRATEGIES This Unit reviews the various multinational strategies available for consideration by Chinese businesses. Topics covered in this Unit include; Why Go International? Misconceptions About International Business, The Three Stage Evolution – Export Stage, Foreign Production Stage, Multinational-Enterprise Stage, Designing Entry Strategies, A Planning Model, Choosing Target Markets, and Choosing Entry Modes. Students should review Rea & Kerzner, Strategic Planning, Chapter 8, in preparation for this Unit. UNIT FIVE – DRUCKER ON GLOBALIZATION This Unit establishes a foundation for the next section of this course by presenting Peter Drucker’s views on globalization. Students will have an opportunity to relate Drucker’s views to the Chinese business environment. SECTION TWO – THE NEW SOCIETY AND CHINA UNIT SIX – DRUCKER ON THE NEW SOCIETY This Unit presents Drucker’s thoughts on the “New Society.” Topics covered here include; The New Demographics, The New Workforce, The Manufacturing Paradox, Will the Corporation Survive? and The Way Ahead.
