The Lottery

The act of the Lottery has been going on for so long that the villagers used to write on wood chips, which now hav been changed to pieces of paper. The black tattered box was carried in and sat on a stool. "Mr. Summer spoke frequentaly to the town about making a new box, but no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box." As the community gathers arond town square, the process begins. Families are narrowed down until there is just one family left which consists of a mother, father and three kids. Each family member opens up their pieces of paper, and Tessie Hutchinson, the mother of the Hutchinson family, reviles that she is the one with the black dot. The town then surrounds her and begins to throw stones at her until she is dead. This manner represents the annual community member stoned that year. It is very easy to imagine what exactly is going on in this community. It is quite clear that the long standing tradition is a must among the elderly, and it even discusses how mad some get when the fact that other communities have stopped the lottery gets brought up. It seems like such a horrible event takes place on a sunny day. Children are running around laughing and playing, while the adults are gathering in front of Town Hall. The men talk about recent events, and women gossip with one another about this and that. As fragile Mr. Summers takes the stand, the crowd grows quite and restless.
