...city, a sharp realization wound through him, haunting the memory of his footsteps, invading the stronghold of his emotions. His eyes watering, he tried once again to make sense of the jumbled information that assaulted his senses. Squinting, he drew out the faint figure of someone lying on the floor across the room. The sight tormented him, gnawed at him. It chased him in his dreams, cornered him in the alleyways of his mind. He wanted to go to her, but stayed rooted at the spot. Over two days passed, during which he scarcely moved. He remained wondering what happened to her, but hindered from finding out. He stayed there, petrified, though parched with thirst and famished. The question at once overtook his reason and shrouded him in despair. Would he die here, alone in his misery? The murdering silence echoed back his question, resounding in his ears with a deafening intensity.
