...ince’s house. The following players are present: Quince, Bottom, Flute, Snout and Starveling. They are gathered for the purpose of Quince assigning people to different parts of the play entitled ‘The Most Lamentable Comedy and Most Cruel Death of Pyramus and Thisby’. Nick Bottom has already been given the part of Pyramus, but has sought to reinforce his acting abilities by launching into this monologue, and to reassure all those present, that he was more than capable of performing the role of Pyramus. He is told by Quince that Pyramus’ role is that of a lover and not of a tyrant. He reiterates that whilst he is best suited for the role of a tyrant, he can easily play the role of the more sensitive lover. This is shown with his statement “To the rest: yet my chief humour is for a tyrant” After reading his monologue we see that Nick Bottom is very confident about his abilities, (perhaps even over-confident) and thinks he will be the best man for the part of Pyramus. He is reinforcing to all those present that he is the best actor to play this part. He implies that the part of Pyramus would have to be played by a very good actor that can move the audience emotionally. Indeed, he says that he will even “move storms” which is a perfect example of how powerful he thinks his performance will be. When he says that he “will condole in some measure”, it means that he thinks he will be able to express sorrow and sympathy whenever the part calls for it.
