Amanda grew up always having to be ready and “fresh” at all times just in case a suitor might come to call. Amanda tells her children repeatedly about the time that she had 17 suitors in one day (pgs. 7-11). In scene two Laura tries to convey that she doesn’t feel that any guy would ever want to be with a girl who is crippled to her mother. Laura has been shy and doesn’t want to have suitors at this time, or even really plans on ever having any. Amanda thinks that “it is a terrible, dreadful, disgraceful that poor little sister has never received a single gentleman caller” (43). Amanda makes Laura get ready for a suitor that is to come to dinner. Tom has found a guy to come as a suitor for Laura from work after Amanda asks Tom if there are any “nice young men” (36) at the warehouse. The night that Tom has invited Jim to dinner Amanda helps Laura get ready for her gentleman caller. “All the fuss” of getting ready has made Laura extremely nervous, so much so that she is making herself sick (52). Amanda tells Laura that “this is the prettiest you will ever be” (52).
