Civil War on Sunday
...to the actual book about the Civil War throughout the story and find out originally that the Civil War (1861- 1865) was a "War Between the States" and is fought between the Southern (Confederate Soldiers clad in gray uniforms and Union Soldiers clad in blue uniforms). They also realized it was a cruel war in which "one out of every five young men in the nation died or was wounded". Within the story they end up at a Field Hospital in Virginia, that can hold 400 injured soldiers. Jack and Annie volunteer as nurses (After much protest from Jack) and were told to attend to 2 tents full of soldiers by feeding the soldiers potatoes and bread as well as providing the soldiers with water to drink, as well as follow the nurses' instructions list. (Their instruction also from Morgan le Fay to find "Something to follow".) "Be cheerful. Lessen sorrow and give hope. Be brave. Put aside your own feelings. Don't give up." The first tent was full of a dozen soldiers. Jack found that the site of the injured soldiers made him queasy, but didn't bother Annie who was serving the soldiers with a "cheerful" smile. After serving those soldiers they went to the other tent that was full of Buffalo Soldiers. It was there that Jack finally was able to come to terms with his surroundings and learned a bit about slavery as well. He gave hope to one appreciative soldier by telling him what he fought for wasn't in vain, and that things will change in the future. (He follows the nurses' instructions to "Lessen sorry and give hope.") "One day your great-great-grandchildren will be doctors and lawyers." "They'll help run the government and schools..." After Jack and Annie finish passing out the food, they are alerted that Clara Baron is back. (A nurse during the Civil War and the founder of The American Red Cross) Jack and Annie go with Clara Barton to rescue more injured soldiers (Both Confederate and Union Soldiers.)
