Regardless of whether the child is in early childhood or middle childhood, excessive praise does not seem to have a positive correlation with higher self-esteem. In fact as the child ages, they may become suspicious of constant and undeserved praise. Genuine praise when deserved, and discipline when needed help children to establish boundaries and adapt to changes in their life. It is important that parents and teachers help a child learn to cope with loses, and not over empathize success. Helping children learn how to solve problems, helps build self-esteem. To help a child the parent must have a healthy self-esteem of his or her own. During the early childhood years, the parents have the most impact on their child’s self-esteem. As the child grows peers, and teachers begin to have an impact on the self-esteem. As a teacher, it is important to provide multiple ways to achieve success in the classroom, and to recognize each student individually. During the period of middle childhood it is important that both parents and teachers work together to help children achieve and boost self-esteem. During this time, many children who may not be as athletically adept as their peers may find little consolation in their academic achievements.
